Description

Costume for Women 1836-1850...

"The silhouette of dresses gradually became more subdued. The change in sleeve shaping has
been compared to a balloon that started to deflate. While fullness in the sleeves did not entirely
disappear, it moved lower on the arm until about 1840 when sleeves became narrower and
more closely fitted. At the same time, skirts lengthened. The result was a subtle change in the
feeling of the costume from one of lightness to one of a heavier, almost drooping quality."

- Phyllis G.Tortora & Kieth Eubank. Survey of Historical Costume.
